Birmingham is the first airport to showcase the rings, which will welcome thousands of fans to the UK over the coming months.

The rings, which have been privately funded by Birmingham Airport, were launched at a special event hosted by radio presenter Joanne Malin and was attended by Olympic and Paralympic Gold medallists Edwin Moses and Lee Pearson.

As part of the Olympic extravaganza, spectators were treated to performances from a string quartet from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, as well as London 2012 Cultural Olympiad project Dance Sansaar, a local Punjabi folk arts group.

Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport CEO said: “The Olympic Games are for the entire country, not just London. Every visitor, passengers and passerby will see our welcome spectacular and we’re really proud to be part of such a historic occasion.

The 719ft-high tower shone like a beacon over south London as it marked the end of an era following the biggest digital switchover yet.

The mother of all transmitters, which reaches a fifth of the country’s TV sets all by itself, will continue to broadcast signals – but only digital ones from now on.

The 219m tall Crystal Palace broadcast tower is illuminated to mark the switch from analogue to digital television, bringing to an the end the 75 years that the antenna has been broadcasting the analogue signal.

BBC unveils memorial to journalists killed in action

Mon, 16 Jun 2008

A light sculpture, dedicated to the memory of journalists and news staff killed in the line of duty, is being unveiled tonight in London by the BBC.

Designed by Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa and BBC Broadcasting House architect Sir Richard MacCormac, the 10m-high glass and steel construction entitled ‘Breathing’ will be uncovered for the first time by the secretary-general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon.

‘We hope this poignant memorial will serve as a nightly reminder of the sacrifice made by many in the cause of free expression and journalism,’ says BBC director-general Mark Thompson.

Situated on the roof of the new wing of Broadcasting House in Portland Place, London W1, it is designed in the form of a giant listening glass and its light beam will extend 1km into the sky.

Every night the sculpture will be illuminated for 30 minutes, in tandem with BBC’s ten o’clock news bulletin.

More than 200 reporters have lost their lives since the start of 2007.

Jaume Plensa was responsible for the Crown Fountain – a public sculpture in Millennium Park, Chicago – and also created a sculpture called Dream in Merseyside for Channel 4’s Big Art Project

Record crowds attend Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage FestivalSeptember 28th, 2011shropshirelive.comThis year’ss Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Festival, held on 24th September 2011, has been branded a huge success by the event organisers, with record crowds of approximately nine thousand people across the day attending the celebrations. This year’s event was of special significance as the Ironbridge Gorge is celebrating 25 years since it was designated as one of the UK’s first World Heritage Sites, alongside Stonehenge and the Giant’s Causeway and 3 other sites. The Festival marked the high point of a year-long calendar of special events, exhibitions and activities put on by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust.Visitors enjoyed a traffic free Wharfage, the road which runs parallel with the River Severn and browsed a wide range of high quality market stalls selling unusual goods and crafts such as unique items of jewellery, handmade homeware and delicious fine foods. Families were able to take part in art workshops, have their faces painted or even have a ride on a donkey or the fairground.Street performers, such as stilt walking Victorian policemen, historic characters and buskers were especially popular with families, whilst the local and community bands and musicians attracted large and appreciative audiences at the two performance areas.Elsewhere in the Gorge Festival goers were able to hire a bike from the Bicycle Hub and explore a section of Route 45, while at Maws Craft Centre there were fantastic demonstrations including traditional historic crafts and steam engines.Street performers attracted large and appreciative audiencesAs dusk fell the Iron Bridge was transformed into a magical apparition, as the multi coloured floodlights illuminated it in spectacular style. Up on the Gorge side giant images were projected onto the trees whilst other buildings were bathed in coloured light. A huge crowd gathered at the centre of the town to watch a grand firework display that ended the evening.Martin Saxton, Operations Manager at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums and event organiser commented;“After months of planning and weeks of hard work by so many different people and organisations, it was wonderful to see the crowds turn up and enjoy this great event. We are incredibly grateful to all the hundreds of people who have helped make this event possible, the local residents for all their cooperation and to our sponsors, Capgemini, Ricoh and Eon for all their support. Seeing the Festival enjoyed by so many people has made it all worthwhile”.Featured in News, Shropshire News
