Pontcysyllte Aqueduct bathed in light for trust launch
THE world-famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct has been bathed in light to mark the launch of a charity trust.
Glandwr Cymru (Canal and River Trust) is being officially launched today.
The running of the Llangollen canal, including the Pontcysyllte aqueduct world heritage site, will be passed to the new charity, which pledges to transform the historic canals and rivers of North Wales.
The charity is appealing for donations for projects to make the canal a haven for people and wildlife for years to come.
The aqueduct was beautifully lit in an evening event before the launch, to mark the start of a landmark 15-year government contract given to the trust to look after the nation’s waterways.
The trust is taking over from British Waterways and The Waterways Trust in England and Wales, the UK’s first major transfer of state run infrastructure into the charitable sector. Its patron is the Prince of Wales.
